The best way to get to know a city like Dusseldorf is to walk or to go by bike. In this way single parts of the town, single streets or certain stations like museums or places of interest can remain more memorable in one's mind.
If one is short on time, one can do sightseeing tours which are offered by the city of Dusseldorf. They can enclose half a day, one day or two days and include stations at the Rhine promenade, the Old Town and their closer surroundings. A popular tour is the Rhine tour, Rheintour. Beginning at the Ehrenhof, the walk goes down to Rhine Park. In summer it is a fantastic grill spot. Passing the Oberkasseler Bridge, along the academy of arts one can reach the old Schlossturm, which is today the shipping museum. The Burgplatz is a perfect place to sit on the steps of the Rhine shore promenade. Further down the promenade one can see the building of the former Mannesmann company, the Mannesmanngebäude, and just behind it the imposing building of the NRW parliament. Following this path the Rhine Tower forms the border to the former port, Medienhafen. This nightlife zone is also great for some daylight discoveries.
The centre of Dusseldorf invites pleasant strolling. Still today the imposing historical old buildings of the Old Town and Karlstadt are the centres of Dusseldorf life. Next to exquisite shops the visitor can also enjoy a lively party scene here. Many bars, pubs and restaurants are in Ratinger Strasse or in the party mile of Bolker Strasse. To go for a stroll, the Königsallee is also worthwhile. As a noble shopping street par excellence, the avenue presents itself in summer under a green foliage canopy. Have a coffee at one of the outdoor cafés between the trees and watch people passing by.
If interested in getting to know more about the single parts of Dusseldorf one should go for a walk through the districts. Kaiserswerth and Oberkassel are very recommendable. Kaiserswerth is the oldest part of Dusseldorf. Its picturesque ancient buildings are surrounded by the Rhine and remind of past glory. Oberkassel, on the left bank of the Rhine, is splendid with its historical houses from the early 20th century and the fantastic close proximity to the Rhine meadows. To have a view from a totally different angle it is interesting to cross Hammer Bridge to Neuss, which lies on the left side of the river and close to the district of Oberkassel. For the younger generation the tree nursery in the Wildpark placed at the Rennbahnstrasse offers very popular excursions.
But also a walk through the woods is much fun. Those walking their dog on a lead should be warned; man's best friend is not seen everywhere with pleasure. To have a better orientation there are certain areas for dogs, Hundeauslaufplätze, which are fenced in. And those who have no desire to walk but would like to enjoy the fresh air though, can make a little cruise on the Rhine by ship . The so-called Kasematten ships in Dusseldorf are available for longer or shorter tours along the river. They are waiting for you at the Rhine shore promenade.
