Lacking a medieval cathedral, ancient ruins or a spectacular setting, Düsseldorf rarely attracts traditional tourists.
Though the city certainly has a number of quaint corners and more than its fair share of monumental architecture, focal points like the Tower of London, Notre Dame or the Brandenburg Gate are admittedly missing; ditto the harried hordes of sightseers (the latter may go a long way to explaining the city’s special charm).
Instead, connoisseurs of urban life come to Düsseldorf for its creative flair and unabashed opulence, its good-natured Gemütlichkeit and prosperous, upbeat atmosphere. The city’s sophisticated joie de vivre is greater than the sum of its architectural parts.
