Thick boots, short trousers, maybe a backpack and a walking stick; that’s how hikers are known. It is worthwhile to test this sport since Germany has really nice regions, including the surroundings of Dusseldorf, which are attractive for walking.

Rheinsteig - A popular and very demanding route is the Rheinsteig path which reaches from Bonn, Koblenz to Wiesbaden for 320 km flush to the Rhine. Sensational views of the Rhine and its vineyards compensate for precipitous paths and sudorific height differences.

Saint James’ Way - The well-known pilgrimage route of Saint James’ Way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain can be walked also in the Rhineland and in the Bergisches Land. The routes from Wuppertal to Cologne and Bonn to Aachen can be split in easier single tours.

Rhein-Ruhr-Weg - Another tour is called Rhein-Ruhr-Weg from Dortmund to Konigswinter. It is about 169 km long and includes many attractions and places of interest.

Schlösserweg - A typical castle tour is the Schlösserweg, 198 km in length from the castle of Benrath to the ruin of the castle of Dillenburg.

Shorter walking routes are also in direct vicinity of Dusseldorf. The districts of Mettmann, Wuppertal, Solingen, Remscheid and the Ennepe Ruhr district offer very nice circular routes and routes to special destinations. While wandering you can view small villages, churches, intact nature and typical places of the Rhine Ruhr region.

Of course you also can go for a walk without planning it. The area of the Rhine is ideal for easy tours for an hour or two or a day tour. The city map of Dusseldorf offers a very good overview of parks, greens and the ways on the Rhine shore. Because there are excellent public transport connections, you can go for a walk without having to worry about the way back. Indeed, it is always good for novices to have the city plan of Dusseldorf handy to avoid losing orientation.
