In every direction, Dusseldorf offers excellent potential for excursions and daytrips – not only to the nearby countryside but even to nearby countries. From the romantic scenery of the vine-clad Moselle valley to the moated castles and stately homes of Munsterland, the diversity of landscape is astonishing. For a change of scene and cuisine, Belgium is barely an hour away, and Holland’s broad North Sea beaches beckon for refreshing weekend getaways.
Germans are known for their urge to travel. But they do not only travel abroad. Weekend trips and short trips in the proximity are just as liked here as big leisure parks. For children and youngsters but also for "young at heart" adults, many leisure parks in the area are absolutely crackerjack.
Zoos and other animal parks make a weekend unforgettable. Field trips to larger cities outside NRW, like Amsterdam, Hamburg or Berlin are also easy to manage. The road and train connections from Dusseldorf is excellent. But first, back to the family.

CentrO Park and CentrO in Oberhausen - The new CentrO Park next to the shopping mall in Oberhausen offers great opportunities for smaller children. The longest tractor railway of the world, a giant adventure playground and many more attractions take place in this park.
Those who like shopping malls must visit the CentrO in Oberhausen. The Mall opened in 1997 and is a prime example for top-flight-marketing and offerings for guests. Already well provided with numerous awards, the shopping mile ranks among the best in Europe.
Phantasialand in Bruhl - If you like to enjoy more action and thrilling then visit the Phantasialand in Bruhl, near Cologne. Numerous roller coasters like the famous "Black Mamba" or the hellacious water ride "River Quest" will make one feel weak at the knees.
Moviepark Bottrop-Kirchhellen - Movie lovers will get excited in the Moviepark in Bottrop-Kirchhellen. The visitor gets the chance to experience figures and scenes of many movies.
Sea Life in Oberhausen - Who would like to see sharks and a lot of rare fish? Sea Life in Oberhausen and in Konigswinter are one of the biggest aquariums in the world. Their basins contain more than 2 million litres of water.
Safaripark in Stukenbrock - The Safaripark Stukenbrock offers a unique Wildlife atmosphere with white tigers, rhinoceroses, elephants, monkeys or giraffes.
Schloss Moyland in Bedburg-Hau - A comfortable and more sublime atmosphere can be relished in the most popular park of North Rhine-Westphalia. Schloss Moyland in Bedburg-Hau is not only a huge castle in unique park scenery but also a museum, where interesting events like fairs, readings or concerts take place.
Night of Museums - Some events that take place every year or all year round are attractive opportunities, too. Once a year in the summer you can enjoy a night of museums in most German cities. During one night all museums can be visited for a reduced price. And not only the museums are part of this event. Several shops, bars and other locations offer additional service. Specially arranged busses shuttle between the museums all night long.
Rhein in Flammen - A crowning highlight is the annually festivity called Rhine in flames, Rhein in Flammen, which takes place from Linz, Remagen and Konigswinter to Bonn. Big coloured fires illuminate the promenades along the Rhine and many sites of interest. Fireworks in Linz, Remagen, Bad Honnef and Konigswinter can be admired from the banks of the river or from one of the passenger ships.
Festivals - For younger fans of music many festivals in summer are a great opportunity to have a look at popular music bands. Some of them take place in near Dusseldorf like the free festival Rheinkultur in Bonn, the Bizarre Festival on the Lower Rhine or the reggae event called Summerjam in Cologne.

Returning to the city, trips to Amsterdam, Hamburg or Berlin. It takes about 2 hours (by car or by train) from Dusseldorf to Amsterdam. Frankfurt, Rotterdam or Brussels can be reached within 3 hours and Berlin, Leipzig or Hamburg take about 4 hours. Paris, Madrid, London, Vienna as well as numerous other European centres are well connected to Dusseldorf by plane.
