Walking in and around Dusseldorf, here and there a display or sign of an upside down triangle with green edging and a white inside image with a raptor can seen. Sometimes, the label conservation area, Naturschutzgebiet can be read. This display is very important for the preservation of any natural landscape in entire Germany because it labels protected landscapes and the flora and fauna within.

A Naturschutzgebiet is a strictly protected area for the conservation of an ecosystem. This kind of protection relates to the animals and plants living in it. But these areas could also be protected for scientific or natural-historical reasons or because of their rareness and pulchritude. Many such conservation areas are fenlands, moor, woods and mountain ranges. Here one is not allowed to leave the signposted paths or to make a campfire or the like, which could trouble or interfere with the flora and fauna. The legal protection of conservation areas is guaranteed by Basic Law and by the guideline Natura 2000. This guideline as a transnational protection system within the European Union and includes the worthy protection of landscapes and bird reserves.

Beside the protection areas there are also the very important nature parks, Naturparks. These broad landscapes are primarily pretended for the protection of the nature and landscapes. But the nature parks are also intended for a durable and environmentally compatible agriculture. Recreational areas and tourism with the respect for the nature and landscape are likewise desired. In Germany one can visit 95 such parks, which contitute 25% of the whole area of Germany. The best-known park is the Wadden Sea in the North Sea, the Eifel, the Bavarian Forest and the Harz Mountains. Near Dusseldorf there is the nature park Rhineland, which lies between the Rhine plain and the stream Erft in the West of Cologne. Another one is the Bergisches Land surrounded by the cities Wuppertal, Solingen and Remscheid. And the park Hohe Mark reaches from the northern Ruhr area to the Lower Rhine up to the southern Munsterland.

In Germany the BUND and the NABU are the two biggest organisations for the protection of landscapes and animals. Additionally, the Ministry of environment and nature conservation, agriculture and consumer protection of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is responsible for the legal and political implementation of activities regarding the conservation of nature and environment.

Conservation areas and nature parks are charming. The intact nature within with their many animals and birds, which can be normally only very rarely be sighted as well as the untouched flora, allure all lovers of nature. They are ideal for cycling tours, jogging and walks because of the prohibition of any motor vehicle. Furthermore you are able to listen to any kind of natural sounds that you normally may never have heard.
