Safe, efficient and sensibly priced, Dusseldorf's public transport system is second to none. A densely woven network of bus and tram routes serves the city and its suburbs as well linking it with neighbouring communities via the S-Bahn rail system.

Outlying areas are served by strategically placed park-and-ride facilities. Since parking is at a premium and petrol heavily taxed, taking the public transport plunge can make good sense both financially and environmentally.

Using the public transport system in Dusseldorf is fast, comfortable and easy. The subway, trams, buses and the s-bahn operate throughout the whole city and they are very well connected to the neighbouring towns and cities. The Rheinbahn provides transport services for Dusseldorf and the metro area. It is part of the Verkehrsbund Rhein Ruhr, VRR that services the greater Rhine-Ruhr Area, the largest metropolitan area in continental Western Europe.

The VRR offers standard tickets with different types of validity periods and validity zones. The Zones are divided in A, B and C.  A-Zone tickets are for public transport rides within the city borders. The B-Zone ticket includes all distances to bordering towns and districts and a C-Zone ticket gives the chance to ride through the whole VRR-Area by public transport.

You can purchase single trip tickets, Einzelfahrschein, 4-ride-tickets, Vierer Karte, daytrip tickets, Tagesticket, monthly tickets Monatskarte as well as short ride, Kurzstrecke  and supplement Zusatzticket . The Kurzstrecke is for 3 to 4 stops only, while the single ticket has a duration of up to 90 minutes in Zone A, 2 hours in Zone B or 4 hours in Zone C. The Vierer Karte can be stamped four times as single trips using each corner. Tagestickets are valid on the day of stamping and even until 3 a.m. on the following day. Monatskarten are available like all the other tickets for Zones A, B or C and can be bought at the Rheinbahn Service Centre in front of Dusseldorf Central Station. Zusatztickets are upgrades for the Monatskarte to ride in a higher subclass from Zone A enlarged to Zone B or from Zone B to Zone C for a single ride. The supplement is also necessary for the border-crossing Regio Train, Maas-Wupper-Express to Venlo in the Netherlands. The fares are not dependent upon the means of transportation, so it does not matter if you go by bus, tram or subway or if you transfer.
Enjoy the ride!
