The city of Düsseldorf bids a final farewell to it's Oberburgermeister Joachim Erwin today, who sadly passed away last week following a long illness.

The ceremony will begin with mass at 9am in the Basilica St Lambertus in the Altstadt, which will be broadcasted to those who cannot be invited to this service due to limited seating in the church. This will be followed by a service in the Tonhalle accompanied by the Düsseldorfer Symphony Orchestra, for which a number of tickets have been made available to the general public.

The funeral service will be concluded at 1pm in the Chapel of the Nordfriedhof, followed by the burial. All citizens of Düsseldorf are welcome to take part in this final part of the day.

The Lord Mayor has been remembered both respectfully and fondly for his work for the city that he loved.

Typically, he wrote his political legacy just a few days before he died:

Keep the purse strings tight!
Make the most of the Kö-Bogen for the benefit to the city!
Build an aquarium of international standing!
Reduce nursery fees in the coming year to zero!
Retain the internationality of the airport!
If anyone can do anything for the good of Düsseldorf, let him go ahead!
Do not become involved in regional projects in which Düsseldorf will lose out!
Keep the city green and well kept!
Punish the sinners of the Sparkasse!
Do not argue over a street name or house number for me!

God bless our city
Joachim Erwin
Düsseldorf, 17 May 2008

He will be missed.
