In April 1985 the book fair on the Königsallee was brought into being. A special occasion, originally planned as a one-off event, it has become an essential part of the urban cultural programme. The event takes place with the financial support of exhibitors, partners from business, and municipal institutions.  Hundreds of thousands of people visit annually the book fair on the Kö.

Germany’s largest "Open-Air book festival“guarantees a vigorous cultural programme. Not just on the Königsallee but also in different public establishments of Düsseldorf people get pleasure from leafing through diverse literary works,. More than 130 hundred regional bookshops, antiquarian departments, publishing houses, literary and cultural institutions are open from 10 to 20 hours, for four days and offer a varied programme full of  literary events, musical performances, cabaret, and theatre. In a very entertaining way the traditional medium of communication is introduced to old and young bookworms.

A special motto is given to the event every year. To draw people’s attention to the sad fate of outdated words the phrase “words threatened with extinction” was chosen this time.

Books for children and young people were also included in the festival’s programme. Famous authors read from their works, among them Jan Cornelius, Mirijam Günther and Marjaleena Lembcke.

Book fairs on the Kö will take place from 10 to 13 June 2010.
