Dog ownership is highly regulated and heavily taxed through a compulsory licence fee which has to be paid for all dogs regardless to their race or size. Cats remain a matter of the citizen’s privacy.
Registration of a dog at the municipal tax office, Steueramt, or at one of the municipal citizen offices, Bürgerbüro can be done personally, by phone or in writing and is quite simple. Just submit personal details and inform about the dog’s race and provenance?? as well as of the date of dog ownership.
After registering, the municipal tax office will send a tax bill showing the amount that has to be paid on behalf of the city treasury. In addition, one will receive a dog tag. Though not obligatory, one should attached to the dog’s collar to demonstrate to the public authorities that the dog is registered.
The fee has to be paid every three months. The payable annual amount depends on the dog’s race and on the number of dogs one has got. Usually, the dog licence fee for one dog amounts €96. If one is the owner of two dogs, one has to pay €150 for each dog. Three or more dogs are charged with a licence fee of €180 for each. If one is the holder of a pit bull, the dog licence fee is notably higher. One pit bull is charged with €600, two or more with €900 each.
