Swimming, which has probably existed since the day a man entered the water for the first time, is said to be a healthy sport with the least risk of injury. The first real competition took place in London in 1837.
The four main swimming styles are breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly stroke, which are combined in the individual medley. Swimming is also the basis for other aquatic activities, for example, water polo, underwater rugby, high diving, and synchronized swimming.
In Germany there are now many organizations and clubs, which promote swimming, especially for younger members
