The annual Tanz in den Mai (Dance into May) is a very special, not to be missed, night of celebration in Germany and many parts of Europe. This is held traditionally every year on the 30th April, the night before the bank holiday on the 1st May.

Its routes are steeped in history and here in Dusseldorf, the traditions in Germany include bonfires, the wrapping of the Maypole, dancing and partying into the early hours and for the romantics at heart – the giving of a tree wrapped in streamers by an admirer or love interest – but not always does a tree wrapped in white streamers signify dislike!
Historically, Walpurgis or witches night as it is also known, was a Pagan tradition where witches saw in the arrival of spring, however, it has changed somewhat over time and here in Dusseldorf the focus is on music and dancing the night away!

For more information on where to go and what to do see our going out section or check out some of your favourite bars and restaurants as they will be sure to have organised a night for you to remember.
