Germans really love travelling and Germany is a great country to do it. One third of the population spends their holidays in Germany. The most popular countries for spending the most relaxing time of the year are Spain, Italy, Austria and Turkey.
But being quite numerous und adventuresome, Germans can be found all around the globe and this due to the fact that more than every tenth holiday maker heads for an overseas destination outside Europe.
Germany - The incredible variety of holiday areas makes Germany a fantastic destination. It’s medieval castles and towns are world famous and the Bavarian Alps are some of Europe’s finest locations for winter sports. Less known by foreigners are the Coasts of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea or the lake district in Mecklenburg. Northern European beaches may generally not stand comparison with the Mediterranean or Caribbean, but strolling barefoot along the beaches of Rügen on a sunny day is just indescribable.
Spain - The warm climate on the Iberian peninsula, white beaches on the coast and nearly endless sunshine are Spain’s secret to attract the second most visitors in entire Europe. The Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands and the strip from Costa Brava to Costa del Sol are the Germans´ holiday dream. Mallorca is called the Germans’ most favourite island and in summer the amount of German tourists easily exceeds that of the native population.
Italy - La dolce vita in bella Italia is what most tourists experience are looking for in the boot-shaped peninsula. The rich cultural heritage, natural beauty of the Apennine mountains and the winding coastline are seductive. Italy was very popular with German tourists in the years of the Wirtschaftswunder and down to the present day, many spots, like Lake Garda or Rimini and Cesenatico on the Adriatic Sea, remain under the influence of the German holiday maker.
Austria - The German sister state offers world class winter sport resorts. Its mountain pistes are fantastic. Very few people from outside the German-speaking countries know about Austria’s others holiday regions, like Carinthia, Styria or lower Austria. Untouched nature and tranquillity in the fertile and flatter parts of the landlocked country are perfect for young families or elderly couples.
Turkey - Holiday destinations like Egypt and Turkey have recorded a sharp increase of tourist traffic. Western Turkey became a pricey alternative to the holidays resorts in south-western Europe. Modern hotels with western European standards and the beautiful setting in the eastern Mediterranean, have made this country a classic holiday destination for Germans.
